Spacial Edition
Masterclass Karl-Heinz Essl
With participants of the Frank Mohr Instituut - Ioan Cocan, Laurina Geertse, Jeroen Meijer, Josien Niebuur, Martijn Verhallen - Essl developed the installation 'Spacial Edition'.
This presentation is combined with the presenation of the project 'Allgebrah, eine Kopfwelt' wich is based on the thoughts of the swiss artist Adolf W?lfli. For this project Essl worked together with the videoartist Michaela Grill.
The installation
Spacial Edition was set up In the 'Pudding Fabriek', Groningen. The installation exists out of 3 videoprojections en 2 different sources with sound (one source is one computer with two boxes). Together with Essl the program was made in MAX/MSP.
The videomaterial focused on being inside or/and outside a space. This idea came from when the participants were in the empty space of the Pudding Fabriek, they could hear trains from the railroadtrack near by. Being in- and outside a space.
8 movies were made from the videomaterial and were used in the MAX/MSP program. The idea was to let the movies play in an random order of 8 without playing the same movie twice. When every movie was played in random order, the process would start over again.
The direction in which the movies were played, and the speed with which they were played, were also determined randomly. Movies would be played forward or backward, the speed could vary from a still image to 30 frames per minute.
The movies would also be played in an random order of direction and speed would change randomly, it could go forward or backward, and the speed is changing randomly.
The program would also randomly decide if the movie would be played in full resolution or could change into one pixel gradually.
